stalking barbara kingsolver

field trip, originally uploaded by ellajohn.

Our big children are back after a week at camp Granny and Grampy. We have been at home staring at wee number three and cruising around the mountains like tourists. We heard that their was a local food restaurant in Meadowview, Virginia that might have something to do with Barbara Kingsolver, so we drove down for lunch. The Harvest Table was homey, fresh, and delicious. The potato salad had grated carrots and fresh dill. I had a chicken and vegetable wrap, and I think that even the wrap was homemade. The menu features locally sourced produce, meats, and cheeses. No, Barbara Kingsolver was not in the kitchen, but this sweet little spot seems right up her alley and in her neck of the woods. I think I've even convinced my husband to read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle as soon as he is finished Sandburg's biography of Lincoln. He and I were once in the same book club, but he eventually dropped out when he refused to read any fiction. Hence, he has never even heard of The Poisonwood Bible.

five am

We are headed for the hospital at five am tomorrow morning to attempt to coax Miss Ruby out. The doctor doesn't think she'll need much coaxing. Cross your fingers people. Under ten pounds. Under ten pounds. Under ten pounds.

Thanks for all the calls and messages today. That was sweet.

baby owl arrives

I cut out an owl family of four for John, but I wanted him to have at least one before I left for the hospital. I want to make a nubby stripey brown felted bowl for their nest. His baby owl in his belly has been hurting him for the past few nights. He has been eating a big dinner, pound cake with strawberries, and then his new favorite, "banana under yogurt".

I made some bird pictues for over John's bed and put three bluebirds and a nest on his mobile.

5 dollars please for a drawing of a castle, a unicorn, or a paper airplane

Our young capitalist is not getting a lot of traffic, but I love the word, "DROINE".

appalachian riviera

appalachian riviera, originally uploaded by ellajohn.

I know, I'm never in the picture and now it has been two in a row. I don't know. It is my last week as a mother of two and the last time I'm going to be pregnant. I'm trying to just get over myself and take pictures. I have the pregnant nose and the puffy feet, and that is just the beginning of the atrocities.

I have to run. John has taken the children away for two hours and I want to do some house projects. Time dwindles, and the mind reels with the desire to paint woodwork, change toilet seats, and scrub the floor. There are owls to sew.

Yesterday I asked John what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer. A bird.

black racer

Days that begin with serpents looking into the bathroom window are not the best.Originally he was clinging to the screen staring in. For the most part I spent the day making food for the children...over and over again. There wasn't much in the house and they kept asking for things that we didn't have. I will never run out of yogurt again. Ella mopped the floors leaving monsoon sized puddles everywhere, and then we opened the doors and windows and let in some unbelievably humid air. I couldn't get the air conditioner to come on. John would not go to sleep in his own bed. It goes on. I'm too pregnant to function.

fifteen feet

Marriage, measured.

I'd be happy to be 15 feet away from my husband indefinitely.....if he had no internet access and didn't have to go to work. Camping, yes. Travelling, yes. The bathroom, no problem, but when the rest of the world and it's cell phones and tiny little handheld internets gets involved I'd have to lengthen my measuring tape.
